Big book I Test 23 I TC Doubt

Hi! Doubt in this TC QQ-

My logic:

  • Predicted “supersede” and “involved”
  • Able to eliminate (A) and (B) as blank 2 was not matching with my prediction

Question: Am unable to eliminate choice (D) and (E)

  • (D) Reverberate is to echo- so here rhetoric echoes over reason; and “clamour” is loud noise; so both sides are fighting loudly
  • (E) Trample matches with prediction; “tangling” means to be entangled in- so both sides are entangled in hypoerbole (or fighting using hyperbole)

Can you please help me understand why this logic is flawed and how I can approach this?

Another doubt from this test in TC:

I was also able to arrive to (D) and (E)- but am having trouble choosing between these two. Wrongheaded and convergent also fit as per my understanding- the theories could be “wrong” and that is why the productivity of approaches is “convergent”, i.e. mixed- +ve / -ve.

To me, the last answer (E) just seemed like a better fit. But can you please help me tighten the logic here, and guide me on how you approach situations like these, where there are two, seemingly correct options- not sure if there is a technique to think about these, so wanted to check

One of the reasons I don’t recommend using Big Book TC is that many questions - like this one - have easy usage eliminations if you are a native speaker. “Reverberate” is a weird usage here, as is clamoring.

I highly recommend analyzing the recent ETS books for TC, not Big Book.

Don’t post new questions in comments, BTW.

Thanks Vince, understood.

The thing is I’ve already exhausted the recent TC book as I’ve given the test a couple of times now. So was trying out tests in the Big Book, because I understand that it’s one of the best resources for verbal practice.

Can you please reccomend how I can proceed if I’ve already done the recent questions?

(Also noted on the questions not posting in comments, will keep in mind)

you haven’t exhausted anything.

We don’t exhaust questions by picking answers, or by thinking we understand the right answer. We exhaust them by taking the time to fully analyze them and discuss the ones we’re not sure about.

I am 100,000% sure you haven’t done that (no one does). Even after I tell you this you still won’t do it (prove me wrong if you like by posting lots of questions here over time).

I.e. you have a lot more juice you can squeeze out of the recent ETS material.

Gotcha!
Makes sense, let me revisit those questions, thanks for your advice.
(And watch out for my queries xd)
