I am somewhat lost here on Q#20. Line 18 talks about the “fundamental requirement, a system free of contradictions…” in line with option I. Moreover, I do not see any evidence for a “generalization must be abandoned” as mentioned in option II. Option III is wrong because there is no evidence to suggest a “new generalization” should be initiated. Any help would be appreciated!
The question wants to know why Quine criticizes classical empiricism. We need to choose the options that point out the differences between Quine’s approach and the classical approach.
Option I: False, since both approaches share the need for a lack of contradictions (lines 3-6 and 18-19). This eliminates B, C, and E.
Option II: True, since only classical empiricism requires the abandoning of the generalization (lines 3-6). Quine’s specifically does not (lines 17-18).
Both remaining answers have II in them, so we now have to evaluate III to decide if it’s A or D.
Option III: False. As you noticed, there is no evidence.
