This one was quite confusing.
I read it sentence structure involves still and contrast with but nevertheless surprised at his
so they known he is young but still were surprised at his young behavior
Saw naivete, ingeniouness both mean amateur , so thought my reasoning is wrong
maybe John is young and they are surprised at his resolve
so chose E
but the answer is A

Now I am confused with my logic and options. ![]()
ingenious means smart, not amateur. But this is a contrast that goes from bad to worse, like “I thought Lance Stroll was a bad driver, but then I saw Brad Pitt drive an F1 car and realized he was worse”.
This less common type of contrast is signaled by the “but were nevertheless”. If it just said “we realized he was young but were surprised at his ______” then “resolve” could also work.

got it thanks alot Vince
Hii Vince, can we solve it with this reasoning we can first we we have the division word “but”, then we can say the idea must be contrasted" he is not impressionable’, but when we readthe sentence we again encounter “nevertheless”, ( so it is becomes like these sentence eg. he is smart, but not that smart), so we just put the word again, put something related to young and impressionable which is naïveté.
I think so yeah
