Big Book Section 2 (Page 195, Question 7)

Within the next decade, sophisticated telescopes
now orbiting the Earth will determine whether the
continents really are moving, ------- the incipient
------- among geologists about the validity of the
theory of continental drift.
(A) obviating … consensus
(B) forestalling … rift
(C) escalating … debates
(D) engendering … speculation
(E) resolving … rumors

My understanding of the question:
Basically, from “Within” to “really are moving” part is neutral which is supported by the other part starting with the blank and ending with “continental drift”. However, I guess I should solve this question with Semantic strategy.
IF within the next decade the continental drift will be proved by telescopes, then this will make sth obvious leading to the agreement between the geologists. So, I chose A. I just want to understand whether my approach is wrong. How can I use math strategy here? Or anyone who has a clear approach to solve this question please share with us as well. Thank you so much in advance to all!

My understanding would be “that there are certainly some doubts “now” which (through telescopes) they will try to resolve” and this idea is supported by the second sentence which clarifies that the ‘incipient’ doubts are about the “validity” of a theory.

This question uses the toolbox completely, and I think being clear with which ideas are being compared and talked about, will help.
C, D are wrong because nothing will be escalated or engendered.
Rumors cannot be “resolved” - hence, its out.
If I choose A the sentence basically will say that the proof will “obviate” the developing ‘consensus’ - completely out of scope and has no evidence. If there was consensus, there would be no doubts.

Making B the best ans.
