Question: It can be inferred from the passage that the author
believes that an important difference among strains
of rats is the
(A) size of their livers
(B) constitution of their skin
(C) strength of their immune-response reactions
(D) sensitivity of their antigens
(E) adaptability of their lymphocytes
The relevant portion of text to answer this is: “Our hypothesis is
that (1) many strains of rats simply cannot mount
a sufficiently vigorous destructive immune-response
(using lymphocytes) to outstrip the liver’s relatively
great capacity to protect itself from immune-response
damage”
Why is the answer C? For me, the answer choice C seems to express the idea that the strength is varying (so some are weak and some are strong), but the text says MANY strains of rat’ immune response system are weak compared to the liver defense capacity, so I would say the closest idea we can extract from it is that MOST rats immune response system are weak, not that “an important difference among strains of rats” is the strength.
Hope someone can kindly give me some insight as to why C is correct.
