[Big book test 1] Applying the 'Math strategy'

In Verbal Greg teaches the math strategy for TC/SE, and in that, he tells to find support and contrast and guessing the blank without looking at the answer choices, how to apply that strategy here, can anyone explain step by step (Coz I go the answer from looking at choices only)

I think you have to do eliminate answer for this one as the idea is simple but the blanks are hard.
