Can someone please help me on this question? I am unclear of logic and how the answer fits.
Darwin’s method did not really ------- the idea of
race as an important conceptual category; even the
much more central idea of species was little more
than a theoretical -------.
(A) require … convenience
(B) apply … measurement
(C) exclude. . practice
(D) subsume … validation
(E) reject… fact
What are the ideas here, do they support or contrast?
I am not sure. I do not understand the question and it’s right answer.
Yeah, but try following the steps to solve the problem. First try and break the sentence into ideas and figure out if they support or contrast each other.
Whenever you find a sentence you can’t understand, try to break it into smaller pieces which you can digest.
Idea of species is more central (important).
The “little more” gives a huge hint to me. It tells me that idea of species( despite being more central) was pretty much just a theoretical _____.
So I’m thinking of two possibilities:
1- Darwin didnt treat race as important, he didn’t even treat species as important (despite being more central)
2- Darwin didnt ignore race, didnt ignore species too. But wait, this doesn’t make sense. This is because he says “even the more central” was little more than a theoretical ___. If he treated the less central idea with some importance, why would he say “even” to justify importance given to a more central idea.
So I’m left with possiblity #1 only.
Option A seems perfect but let’s just check the other options.
B - theoretical measurement? doesnt make a lot of sense to me ( we are talking about importance of categorisation)
C- Opposite
D- Nothing about validation of a theory.
E- Opposite
Pretty good question in my opinion.

That helps. Thanks Tushar.
