Big book Test 27 Section 1

Please help solve this question using Greg Math Strategy. I used below strategy to find the right answer but I am not sure if I am following the correct method or not.

Have caused = Support

rush pell-mell into situations = Negative

1st part - Intellectual ------- and flight from boredom will also be negative

I used the same word boredom because I couldn’t guess the word.

That = Support

1st part - Intellectual ------- and flight from boredom have caused him to rush pell-mell into situations = negative

2nd part = less------- spirits might hesitate to approach

I used the same word given in the 1st part “less intellectual”

Going with the connotation 1st word of C, D, E are wrong. 1st word of B is no evidence therefore this is wrong too. Using this method I chose A.

I think I am skipping some steps from Greg Math Strategy or not using it correctly because I am not sure about the support or contrast word. Please advise.

When using math strategy, it’s important to first understand the structure of the sentence, not just individual words. This helps with being able to pick out support/contrast.

This sentence is describing a subject who enjoys novelty and excitement, and pursues opportunities to engage in activities others might avoid.

Blank 1: “And” sticks out to me as the support cue word–we want something that reinforces his impulse to “[flee] from boredom”. I thought of something along the lines of curiosity mixed with drive (I often come up with a suite of words so I can focus more on the concept of the blank). Restlessness fits well here because it conveys the compulsive nature of his exploration.

Blank 2: I agree with “that” as a support word, and I think the previously mentioned strategy works great here. The issue is in determining what is being previously mentioned. It’s not that he’s simply “intellectual”, it’s that he’s intellectually restless, which gives him a tendency toward novelty and risk–he’s adventurous, while the others are less so.
