What makes “superficial” better choice than “trivial”. I solved the question following the logic given below: “but” contrasts the first blank and the sentence following it. So the blank should contrast “central value”. I guessed the word “ dispensable” for the first blank. I though trivial was closest to the dispensable. Also I thought superficial did not have evidence, so I eliminated it.
(A) is a better fit because the second word fits better with the second blank.
Also ‘central virtue’ contrasts better with ‘superficial’ (because trivial contrasts better with ‘essential’) ‘superficial contrasts better with ‘core/central’.
I guessed the word “ dispensable” for the first blank –> this probably explains why you got confused. We know the first blank is a negative word but we can’t know what it (for sure) means. It is better to keep an open mind and see which options fit better.
