Big Book Test 8 Short passage 1

Hey,

Here’s the passage.

Here’s the question I have problem with.

Why is B wrong here? After reading the question, I inferred that for the profile to be inaccurate, there must be something wrong with the instruments. And the passage says this starting from line 13. “The seismic records must be processed to correct for the positional differences between the source and the receiver,…”

This passage introduces, then explains the seismic reflection method. As you’ve identified, the passage directly states that one step of the method is correcting for positional differences between the source and the receiver. Therefore, even if (B) “the receiver were not positioned directly at the wave-train source”, the method would work. Because the question is asking for something that would make the method not work, option B is incorrect.

I would also consider why the assumption is that “there must be something wrong with the instruments”. It seems to me that there are multiple assumptions/steps in the process that could lead to an inaccurate result.
