Big Book_test1_Section 4_Text completion_Question 6

I need your help in POE for the following TC question from Bigbook
The theory of cosmic evolution states that the universe, having begun in a state of simplicity and -------,has ------- into great variety.

I see a contrast here: Universe (earlier state) simplicity and ------- (current state) great variety

Blank 1 should be parallel to simplicity—(I am going to use the same word) Simplicity

Blank 2 should be the opposite of simplicity. We have Great variety.

The main idea is theory says that CS started with simplicity but evolved/expanded into great variety

(A) equilibrium … modulated
(B) homogeneity … differentiated
(C) contrast. .metamorphosed– Incorrect Blank 1 is not equal to simplicity
(D) proportion … accelerated– Incorrect Blank 1 is not equal to simplicity
(E) intelligibility … developed– Incorrect Blank 1 is not equal to simplicity

I am not sure how to POE one of the two choices(A and B ) above

I don’t think blank two needs to be the opposite of simplicity but it does need to support this idea. The contrast would be between “begun in a state” and the blank. What’s the opposite of beginning? Evolving, growing, changing etc.

What’s the opposite of great variety? Homogeneity. What’s the parallel to evolved? Differentiated.

You can eliminate A because the sentence isn’t talking about equilibrium. You can have balance with both variety and homogeneity. It’s talking about simplicity to complexity. Beginning to evolving.

Please lawd let the answer be B otherwise I need to dust off the old drawing board and once again humble myself to the GRE gods.
