Big Book Text Completion (TC) question 7 T5 S4 p208

This is question 7 from Test 5, Section 4, page 208 of the Big Book.

Here the correct option is E but I chose B due to the following thought process:

The ‘by’ Supports the - connotation of ‘reduced’, and hence the blank should be negative or neutral. Here I thought the blank could be neutral too, but I do admit it was because I used my Ear (sorry Greg). I guessed the word ‘dilute’ for the blank and proceeded to look at the options.

A and C had No Evidence.
D Contrasted Connotation.
B made more Semantic sense than E due to the fact that you try to ‘translate’ your experiences into words, and often words don’t exactly delineate the experience.

Could someone pinpoint my mistake in this?
Thank you in advance!!

I see the blank as having a negative connotation (support word: “that”, supported evidence: “conspiracy against corruption”; evidence connotation: “-ve”, and therefore the blank having a -ve connotation). You rightly predicted the word as “dilute” and your logic in choosing “trascribe” seems to be sound, but “manage” has more of a negative connotation than “transcribe” - no storytelling required.

could you expand on why manage has a more negative connotation, because I am failing too see it that way?

Using “manage” can imply hardship. For instance, “After she lost her job, they had to manage on his salary” suggests a challenging financial situation.

I don’t think there’s any negative connotation involved with “manage”. “Manage” is neutral.

The - connotation comes entirely from “reducing”.

Got it, but in that case, how does one decide between “transcribe” and “manage”?

Is the right hand side of the “by” talking about writing stuff down or breaking stuff down? You can bring in semantics

breaking stuff down and not writing necessarily. Got it.
Transcribe means to specifically put things in the written format, which does not fit. I mistakenly thought it was a direct synonym for translate.
Thanks!
