If theory doesn’t contradict with accepted theory,isn’t it banal?
The charge against the sociologist’s new theory is that it contradicts accepted sociological principles. Heretical means holding an opinion at odds with what is generally accepted. Banal, on the other hand, means lacking in originality or being obvious and boring. So, in this context, heretical fits better than banal as a response to the charge against the sociologist’s new theory.
