BigBook TC Test 20 Section 6 Question 4

Hi Team,

I am confused between option A and D. Option A seemed to be more relevant given the evidences. May you help me understand why A is wrong?

Synopsis of Approach b/w A and D:

“as” is support, Idea1: denigrate books hence 1st Blank should be -ve.
morally “bad time” to earn profit… hence both A and D make sense.

“but” is contrast, Idea1: denigration.
hence 2nd Blank should be contrast with “denigration”. “encourages” is better contrast than “legitimizes”. Plus no hint for “legalising” anything. Hence A is better than D.

Detailed Approach:

  • 1st Blank:
  1. “as” is a support.
  2. Idea 1 is, “denigrating” Books. Hence, Blank should be “bad” or negative.
  3. Eliminates Option B as “fortuitous” is positive.
  • 2nd Blank:
  1. “but” is a Contrast.
  2. “them” is used for books.
  3. Idea 1 is, “denigrating” Books. Hence, Blank should be “encourages” them(books) or Positive.
  4. Removed option E as No hint for generation.
  5. Removed option C as No hint for protection.
  6. Removed option D as No hint for legalising anything.

Marked Option A as Inopportune is negative. and “encourages” is better antonym for “denigrate”.

Thank you

Inopportune means a bad time to do something.

But this sentence is saying people write books when catastrophe happens because it’s a good time - an opportune time – to write a book. Everyone is interested because it’s new. Write a book. Sell it. Make lots of money.

If you wait, everyone will have forgotten about it. THEN that becomes an inopportune time to do it.

Another clue is the morally. Generally things are not thought of as morally inopportune. It’s not common usage.
