Can someone pls help with my math stratergy thinking

Although Mount Saint Helens has been more ---- during the last 4500 years than any other volcano in the coterminous United States, its long dormancy before its recent eruption — its violent nature.

A) awe-inspiring… restrained

B) gaseous …confirmed

C) explosive …belied

D) familiar…moderated

E) volatile…suggested

with although as the dividing word to the right we have long dormancy before recent eruption which is a negative so the first blank should be a positive hence i placed dormant/quiscent/inactive as my guess words but turns out the answer is exploasive

Is although a support or contrast word?

It’s a contrasting word.

Yes, so when we think of a word for the blank that contrasts with dormancy, what do we get?

Hmmm so we only considered long dormancy (then the contrast would be active ) but when we consider the idea “long dormancy before its eruption” (which is a -ve) then wouldn’t the contrast be dormancy it self. Btw really am great full for your patience.:folded_hands:

Yes, essentially. The first blank is concerned with how active the volcano has been historically. A single, “recent eruption” doesn’t have any bearing that history. A “long dormancy”, however, does speak to a longer period of time, and should be considered in relation to the broader pattern as part of the last 4500 years.

What did you predict for the second blank when you initially answered this question?

Well this makes sense I impetuously guessed explained while solving the question not I am aware it should be something like hides. So “long dormancy” is idea chunk 1 and “recent eruption” is idea chunk 2 and although contrasts with chunk1. Thank you for the clear explanation though I have one more request could you just point of the word that separates the idea chunk is it “its”. Once again am really thankful.

Well, they’re part of the same idea chunk, but only one portion of the idea applies specifically to blank 1. The “recent eruption” is more of a set up for blank 2, along with “violent nature”. But ultimately, this is one of those questions where it’s best to think about the sentence holistically–both blanks play off each other and require us to use the same clues to solve both.
