I mildly disagree with the statement that the best way to teach is to praise positive actions and ignore negative ones. This statement is not applicable universally.
In a class full of students where teachers are meant to be setting a precedent, praising positive actions but ignoring negative actions will not help create a disciplined environment. While many students are well behaved and understand the seriousness of being in an educational institution, others may not be as well behaved or serious. While there can be a myriad of reasons, setting a precedent by taking appropriate disciplinary actions should be the norm. When a student misbehaves with a professor the respective educational institution does hold the right to suspend the student to ensure that other students are not following suit.
At home, if parents praise positive actions and ignore negative ones, the child may grow into an adult who may lack important qualities like accountability. If the child is not reprimanded when exhibiting negative actions, he will not realise that his actions are essentially negative. As a result, he may end up imbibing those negative actions in his behaviour and grow into an adult exhibiting those negative behaviors. If he is not inherently aware that he is exhibiting those negative behaviours, he may not be in a space where he can take accountability.
I do concede that praising positive actions may further lead to enhanced positive behaviours. I say that because this validation will further lead the person to exhibiting more of those actions they’re being praised for.
However, more positive actions don’t negate the potential for negative actions. Keeping those negative actions in check at the right time will ensure the all round, balanced development of an individual.
