Definition of a base of a triangle

Hello! In regards to Question 3 in Geometry Progress Quiz #5 (What is the base of an isosceles right-angled triangle whose area is 40?), I wonder if the GRE never considers the hypotenuse as the base. I find it quite tricky that the “right-angled” definition of a base takes precedence over the 'isoceles" definition of a base.

Thanks!

The GRE doesn’t “consider” anything. A base can always be any side of a triangle. The height just needs to be perpendicular to that base.
