Did anyone ever come across a linear equation in 4 variables and 4 equations given in the real GRE?

I recently came across a question in the chapter 17 of 5lb where they gave us with 4 different equations and we have to solve for the 4 different variables. I spent around 10 minutes but couldn’t figure out what manipulations can be made to solve it. Do we usually get such questions or is it generally the 2 or 3 variable ones?

If there are four equations, then it can be solved for 4 different variables, using elimination, taking two equations at a time

The equations are -

  1. L-3 = 2T-6
  2. L-3 = M+27
  3. L = 47 + W
  4. 2T + 8 = W+4

These equations seem annoying and always cancel out leaving constants on both sides. Why don’t you give it a try? I’ve put up the question above.

Is it 144?

Nope, it seems to be 138

But you could find the values, maybe there’s a calculation mistake. What two equations did you start with?

Yeah, by mistake got the value of L=64 but its 61

The equation #4 is wrong. It should be (W+4) =1/2(T+4)
