Doubt from session 8: 1 Month Verbal Plan

Here, my approach was math strategy. Look at colon, which means part aftet colon will support the part before it.

”A way to close the book on at least a few questions about human nature” - a few questions made me believe that he’s looking for different answers which is why i went ahead with ans E - Derivative.

Also, the 1st part “Particularly..seems to be looking” would mean contrast, so while he particularly looks for something, is seeming to look for some derivative answers.

Pls suggest if the approach is ok?

What is the definition of the word “derivative”, and can you explain how that fits to what you were looking for?

“Particularly..seems to be looking” would mean contrast

Can you point out any specific contrast words in the sentence that would indicate such?

What is the blank actually referring to? You seem to believe the blank is referring to the number of questions Vaillant is solving, but look again and see if that’s actually the case.

Derivative here I thought meant, taking information from varied sources and not one..so that he has atleast a few questions about human nature to close the book with.

Might be a dumb train of thought but how to restrain yourself from this?

Can you help me find that? Your approach will help me understand the steps to take. Thanks so much

Not a dumb train of thought, just a speculative one…and we never want to speculate or contort words to fit into the sentence. They should always fit easily and logically. Make sure you know the definitions and usage (tone) for words. Check the definition and usage of derivative and tell me whether it makes sense as a synonym for “various” or “several”.

You had a good instinct here:

Look at colon, which means part aftet colon will support the part before it.

But you were focused on the wrong aspect of the clause after the colon. You correctly understood that the word in the blank must describe the nature of the answers Vaillant seeks, but limited yourself to thinking that is was “many” answers because it said “at least a few questions”. However, there are other ways to describe answers–good, bad, strong, weak, etc.

Looking back at the clause after the colon, try to find another phrase that could be used to describe the nature of the answers that isn’t about quantity. I’ll give you a hint: the correct clue is an idiom, so if you aren’t a native English speaker, you may want to look up any portions that seem oddly worded.
