Due to phrase “normally used” and if you fill startling : meaning unexpected (Blank i) then you want to move away from normal hence, if you put experiment then it will fail to justify the use of startling in blank i

Something is considered ‘startling’ because it is surprising or unexpected. The author considers the playwright’s approach startling because the playwright did not follow the ‘normal’ or ‘expected’ approach.
