I am not able to understand the math that Greg proposes in this video. For this question mentioned below, what I understood is that the word “though” is attributed a (-) value but what is the value of “in common”? Greg mentions the blank is going to have the word which will be opposite to “in common”. Why is that? Is it because “in common” has a (+) value and hence (+)*(-)= (-). Thus a opposite word to “in common” word, since negative implies opposite? Can someone please explain this math?
The question is:-
Philosophical problems arise when people ask questions that, though very ------, have certain characteristics in common.
A) Relevant
B)Elementary
C)Abstract
D)Diverse
E)Controversial
You can treat “in common” as either positive or negative:
If it is negative, then (-) x (-) = (+), and the answer would have to be positive or the opposite of “in common”
If it is positive, then (+) x (-) = (-), and the answer would have to be negative or the opposite of “in common”
Both ways the answer is (D) diverse
Why would both (+) and (-) of “in common” lead to “diverse”? Shouldn’t it be different? If its positive shouldn’t it mean a word that is synonymous to “in common” and not opposite to it?
If its’s negative I understand that it will be opposite to the “in common” but how does positive value also leads to the same opposite word of “in common” ? Can you please explain on this?
That’s true when there is no usage of the word though
Though works as a contrast/(-)
In fact by ignoring though makes your life harder, as there is no synonym of common in the options.
The answer stated by the person before, considers that “in common” can be attributed as either (+) or (-). How is that happening? From my understanding, if “in common” is given a (-) and “though” with (-), that makes it (-)*(-)=(+). Thus the answer in the blank to be same or synonymous to “in common” and not opposite. I don’t see a similar word to “in common”. Where is my understanding going wrong?
In this video, I don’t see Greg to be doing such math (+)(-) or (-)(+). Just based on whether it is support or contrast, the blank is chosen. So why is that?
Cause you need to evaluate (+/-) based on the ideas split by the contrasting word, not just the blank.
Go through his other strategies.
Hey I know this is old. But How do you find videos like these. I mean are they part of the study plans as well. Cause they really helped me get a better understanding of the concept that greg taught.
