Du Bois’ foreign trips were the highlight, not the -------, of his travels; he was habitually on the go across and around the United States.
(A) idiosyncrasy
(D) culmination
(B) result
(C) precursor
(E) totality
The correct answer is in bold.
My doubt is why not idiosyncrasy? I got the math strategy right by putting habit in the blank and even Greg did the same. I chose (A) because it means about habit (particular to an individual). Even google listed habit as a synonym of (A). Can someone explain to me why is totality the right answer here?
we have contrasting ideas in here ,
Foreign with domestic (habitually on the go across and around the United States)
So, blank(i) will be the opposite of highlight and the only idea which matches our guess of opposite of highlight is option (E) totality
Yes, I am aware that there exists a contrast. But what exactly does totality mean? Google defines totality as “a whole of something”. Could you tell me what totality means in above context?
Totality in this context means the total number of trips he is taking==Foreign+Domestic…If in case there was a synonym for domestic in the answer choices along with totality, then it would be very difficult to choose an option for this question…in that case the second sentence would have been different to choose the correct answer. However, here the second part of the sentence says, he is constantly travelling in the US, so his US trips were kind of commonplace.
