how do you know when to use the equal not equal strategy?

Here’s an example. When I look at this problem, I see a variable (y) and a number (-15). My first question is “can I make y = -15”. If I can, then my next step is to see if I can make y another number.

So if you’re ever presented with a QC question that has answers which could possibly be the same number, try and make them the same. Even if you can’t, you probably learned something that will allow you to solve the problem another way.
