ETS Verbal Guide TC Question

Hey all,

This is an interesting question. I always thought that for blank (ii), both “penchant for” and “distaste for” could work. For instance, to me, if the intellectuals felt the need to rationalize their “distaste for” pop culture, really they like it but they (the intellectuals) want to show other academics they don’t because of their (the other academics) “investment in” the old hierarchy.

As for the other option, if they feel the need rationalize their “penchant for” pop culture, really they like it but feel the need to rationalize their liking it in order to sell it to other academics who are invested in this older hierarchy.

If any experts can tell me what I am missing here, I’d really appreciate it. Thanks!

that makes sense. They wouldn’t like pop culture if they were rationalizing their distaste - i.e. the distaste would still be there.
