can you write a summary of how you eliminate/kept each option?
I looked for the main idea that is the surface painting is an authentic work of Van Gogh, then the assumption it is based on. So, the main idea is based on the assumption that the face of woman in under image is found on other canvases of Van Gogh. By this, I was able to eliminate D and E as these options do not talk about under image of the lady. Again, the conclusion doesn’t talk anything about styles used in canvas, which helped me to eliminate A.
But then, I got confused between B and C as I could not figure out the difference in meaning these two options conveyed. Both options are talking about under image that are common in Van’s canvas…how are they different?
B) Many painted canvases that can be reliably attributed to van Gogh contain underimages of subjects that appear on at least one other canvas that van Gogh is known to have painted.
This assumption suggests that the presence of underimages is a common occurrence in van Gogh’s paintings, and therefore, the self-portrait with the underimage of the woman’s face is likely to be authentic. While it may seem plausible based on the assumption that van Gogh’s paintings often contain underimages, it is not explicitly stated or supported in the passage.
C) Any painted canvas incorrectly attributed to van Gogh would not contain an underimage of a subject that appears in authentic paintings by that artist.
This assumption states that if a painting is falsely attributed to van Gogh, it would not contain an underimage of a subject found in his authentic paintings. This assumption directly supports the conclusion that the surface painting is an authentic self-portrait by van Gogh. If the painting were incorrectly attributed to van Gogh, it would not exhibit the underimage that matches those found in his known works.
