Finding number of solutions

I encountered this question in one of the miniquizzes and was wondering how to figure out if any of the 4 solutions are the same/repeated.

I could not factorize one of the 2 resulting formulas, and so used b^2-4ac to find out how many solutions there are. Both resulted in 2 each, but I don’t know if any of them are repeated. The correct answer is 4. Thank you!

You don’t necessarily need to factorise the two quadratics you got - just use the quadratic formula.

Specifically the discriminant part of it

Right, that’s what I did. But what if any of those 4 solutions are the same?

The quadratic formula will tell you the exact solutions.

I’ve never really seen any case of the solutions overlapping, but you can always sketch it quickly to confirm
