Why don’t we expend the line?

can you post the actual figure without any extensions or comments?

AD is the transversal for the parallel lines AB and CD. So we do know that x = v.

Now, AD is intersected by the segment extended from point B, let’s call this point on AD as P. Similarly let’s call thus point on AD extended from C as Q.

Since they have not given any constraint on the lines BP and CQ, P can be anywhere on the line AD i.e. point P is not fixed. So the angle y depends on where point P lies. Similar argument for point Q and angle w can be made. So y and w are not known. so we can’t be sure if y=w or y<w or y>w
