Geometry Problem Solving Question - Manhattan Prep

Hi,

Please can someone help me understand why do we need to find the volume(s) and not the surface area(s) here?

I initially solved this by finding surface areas and got c) 216 as the answer, however, the answer is D and that can be found by finding the respective volumes and not the SA.

Please help.

Thanks

How many cubes do you have?

6 solid cubes

Forget what I wrote; The simplest way is to understand what SurfaceArea and Volume actually meant :https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=R0ajg1jO-H0

I think the answer lies in space occupied by a cube or a cuboid = the volume of the 3D shape and hence I need to find the volume and not the SA here.

@HoldMyBeer the cake example made sense too. thanks a ton
