Geometry TickBox Quiz 10

My rationale here was since x is the exterior angle, it is equal to y+z as per properties of trianges. This means we’re comparing 2x and 180 in the question. Now I would assume x is obtuse from the image because if you were to draw a perpendicular to the horizontal line, x appears more than 90 degrees. so even say if it were 91 degrees, 2x would be 182 which is greater than 180. Hence, I went with A. But this is wrong as per answer (D). Are the figures not drawn to scale on the GRE?

Yes, figures are not drawn to scale.

This is QC question, so you should be open to more than one interpretation of question.

Use choosing number strategy and equal not equal strategy.

  1. say given triangle is equilateral so y, z are both 60 and quantity a becomes 240 which is bigger than 180
  2. say given triangle is right angle triangle, so y, z are both 45 and quantity a becomes 180 which is equal to 180
    Hence, choose answer D
