GRE Big Book Reading Comprehension Page 712

The OA is (D) because of the mention of ‘zeal’ in line 4.

However, I chose (A) for the simple reason that the same line 4 also says that scientists are EXPLORING.

Does that not mean that scientists are not themselves aware of all the facts surrounding the deuterium-tritium fusion reaction?

If I am still exploring something, I definitely do not know all the facts about it.

Thanks,
Vaibhav

That’s actually a good point, I’m not sure.

My guess is that in ETS’ view “exploring” is not enough to imply they lack awareness of facts, but maybe there’s something else wrong with A, I’m not sure.

Maybe somebody else can help here, otherwise it might be worth posting this on r/GRE or GRE Prep Club.

I think your logic for the idea of exploring makes sense, however I don’t think it takes into consideration all of what choice B is saying. Sentence 4 basically states that scientists are zealous in their exploration of the reaction. It does not say that they overlooked key facts or that they did so in order to prove the practicality of nuclear fusion. Further in the passage it says no energy program should be based on this until it is proven practical but this doesn’t mean the scientists are trying to do this. I think that’s part of the trap of answer B.

Can we prove answer choice D? Yes, because it says in the passage they have been exploring with zeal, which means they’re super excited. So you can’t say they are dispassionate.

We can definitely say B is wrong, the challenge is trying to disprove A.

He makes a good point when he says “exploring” = “not aware of all the facts”.

I totally read that wrong. Whoops.

I guess you could lean on the question in this case which asks which one is most directly suggested by the passage.

It says zeal explicitly. But the only fact that scientists know and is stated in the passage is that the reaction produces alpha particles and neutrons. So I suppose we could say they don’t know all the facts. So A could also be true.

But if I’m answering which one is most directly stated in the passage I’d choose D.

Would be good to get an opinion from an expert (who actually reads the comments correctly )

@margot.e.shumway Yeah, D is definitely better supported as it’s more direct. A is more of an inference, but the question does use the word “suggest”, so that’s okay too.

@gregmat If you get a chance, can you help out here?
