Gre big book Test 27 TC Question

Even though they tended to be ------- strangers, fifteenth-century Europeans did not automatically associate ------- and danger.

Hi
Please I need help understanding the logic behind solving the second blank.

This is how I tackled the problem:

Blank 1 is being contrasted (even though) with the second idea saying that ‘the Europeans did not automatically associate danger’
This means blank 1 will be synonym of dangerous.

Blank 2 is a support because of the word ‘and’. Blank 1 is the first idea and ‘danger’ is the second idea. So, blank 2 will be negative.

Not quite.Try thinking more about ideas rather than the words themselves supporting/contrasting:

they _____ strangers [ even though (-)] they didn’t associate _____ and danger.

How can we make these ideas be contrasting?

Okay, I’ll say that the first idea is saying ‘the strangers were dangerous’ using the clue we got from solving blank 1. First idea is a negative thing, that means all of second idea will be a positive thing.

To contrast the first idea ‘they tended to be dangerous strangers’, these Europeans don’t see strangers and immediately see danger.
