GRE Essay Feedback

Good afternoon,
I recently wrote an essay for the prompt "The rise of artificial intelligence poses more risks than benefits to humanity.

Write a response in which you discuss the extent to which you agree or disagree with the statement and explain your reasoning for the position you take. In developing and supporting your position, you should consider ways in which the statement might or might not hold true and explain how these considerations shape your position.". I wrote it on the GregMat website and got a 4.0, but ChatGPT says it’s 5.5-6.0. I would appreciate any feedback regarding which website may be more accurate for this essay. Thank you!

Over the last few years, artificial intelligence has advanced significantly and is beginning to play a major role in society. Some argue that artificial intelligence, as a whole, is harmful to society. Others argue that artificial intelligence poses more benefits than risks. I believe artificial intelligence is generally beneficial for humanity because it makes processes more efficient and opens up new areas of development. Still, in the short term, artificial intelligence can lead to the loss of jobs. However, the view that artificial intelligence is harmful falls short in cases such as writing code and automating processes such as approving healthcare claims, which I will explore below.

To begin, artificial intelligence often improves the efficiency of processes. For example, an artificial intelligence model like ChatGPT can generate hundreds of words for an article in minutes, or write code for a video game from scratch in less than an hour. If an individual would like to make the video game “Flappy Bird” with artificial intelligence, they could prompt it to create the game, and it would be done in an efficient manner. Before the advent of artificial intelligence, this person would likely have had to code the script manually, which would take days, if not weeks. This can be applied to nearly every job sector in the world today, from law to business to sports. Lawyers can use artificial intelligence to generate legal documents, businesses can analyze data with artificial intelligence, and sports leagues like the NFL can use tools like ChatGPT to determine which players are worth spending money on. In each of these job sectors, artificial intelligence is beginning to revolutionize how work is done, causing a significant increase in speed. This provides a benefit to society that cannot be understated.

Next, artificial intelligence enables businesses to look into topics that would previously be undeveloped. For example, before the advent of artificial intelligence, it would be difficult to program a computer to interview a candidate for a job position or provide customer service. Now, with the usage of artificial intelligence, nearly every business is able to program an automated system to interact with humans. Innovations such as these drastically decrease the amount of money spent on people who would have to provide customer service or interview candidates. Without artificial intelligence in scenarios such as these, businesses would have to pay workers. In addition, they would take factors such as sick leave and paid time off into consideration as well. However, artificial intelligence is available each moment of each day. Nearly every business in the world today interacts with clients, and artificial intelligence can take the place of some humans in nearly all of these scenarios. Therefore, artificial intelligence with regard to human interaction provides a large benefit to humanity.

However, some argue that artificial intelligence is detrimental to humanity because it can cause the loss of jobs. For example, if an artificial intelligence system were to replace customer service workers in an insurance company, those customer service workers would lose their jobs. Most businesses in the world have some sort of customer service, and when those jobs are lost, workers are displaced with no obvious alternative. Thousands of workers in the USA alone would no longer have the money necessary to provide for their families. Although I do concede that this is an unfortunate consequence, creative destruction will always have consequences. For example, when textile mills were created, most workers who made clothes by hand lost their jobs. However, in the long run, this did not entail a permanent loss of jobs for future generations. New job opportunities opened up, such as workers to manage textile mills. Similarly, in the future, there will be new jobs to operate artificial intelligence systems, and it is unlikely that the loss of jobs will be permanent. It can then be said that there may be a short-term loss of jobs, but over hundreds of years, jobs will come back, but the benefits of artificial intelligence will remain.

In conclusion, artificial intelligence makes many processes faster and can save businesses money by replacing the jobs of humans. Although this may lead to a loss of jobs temporarily, jobs are likely to come back eventually. Artificial intelligence should be used to enhance existing processes and create new ones, benefiting humanity in the long run.
