GRE Mock Review (313: Q162 V151) — Looking for advice on reaching 325+

Hi everyone,

I recently took a GRE mock and scored 313 (Q162, V151). The sectional breakdown was:

  • Verbal 1: 6/12

  • Verbal 2: 8/15

  • Quant 1: 12/12

  • Quant 2: 11/15

I’m aiming for 325+ and would really appreciate advice from people who improved from a similar range.

A bit of background: I’m a former Merchant Navy officer. I initially prepared for the GMAT for about 3.5 months, but after scoring below 500 in official GMAT mocks, I switched to the GRE in mid-April. Since then, I’ve been preparing primarily using GregMat and studying around 6–7 hours a day.

At this point, I’ve gone through most of GregMat’s quant and verbal strategy videos. Honestly, I’m starting to feel fatigued from consuming more strategy content and increasingly feel that I should spend more time simply solving questions and reviewing mistakes.

After doing a detailed error analysis of my mock, here’s what I found:

Quant

Strengths:

  • Comfortable with geometry and symmetry questions

  • Good at plugging in numbers when algebra gets messy

  • Strong arithmetic and algebra fundamentals

  • Usually able to solve missed questions during review

Weaknesses:

  • Sometimes miss parity (odd/even) questions

  • Make silly percentage conversion mistakes under pressure

  • Boundary/range mistakes in rounding questions

  • Occasionally struggle translating word problems into expressions

I feel my quant ability is higher than 162 because most mistakes were execution or time-pressure related.

Verbal

Strengths:

  • Sentence Equivalence is relatively strong

  • Decent vocabulary base

  • Scientific RC is easier for me than humanities/history RC

  • Often able to solve verbal questions correctly during review

Weaknesses:

  • Dense historical RC passages destroy me

  • I am very bad at active reading

  • I often experience brain fog during RC, especially in long or abstract passages

  • I lose track of viewpoints, author’s attitude, and competing theories

  • I misread answer choices under time pressure

  • I sometimes miss trigger words like however, although, despite, or masks

  • A few vocabulary gaps still remain

One interesting observation is that many questions I got wrong during the test became correct during review, which makes me think my biggest issue is execution under pressure rather than lack of understanding.

My target score is:

  • Q167+

  • V158+

  • 325+ overall

My questions:

  1. Has anyone gone from 310–315 to 325+? What helped the most?

  2. At this stage, should I stop watching strategy videos and focus almost entirely on solving questions and maintaining an error log?

  3. Are GregMat and official ETS material enough, or should I add other resources?

  4. What resources are best for improving RC, especially dense historical passages?

  5. How did you improve active reading and reduce brain fog during verbal sections?

  6. Based on my mock profile, what would you prioritize over the next 6–8 weeks?

Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!
