GRE RC Inference Question: Why is Choice C Supported Without Making a Leap?

Hi everyone,

I’m confused about this GRE reading comprehension inference question.

I understand that it is an inference question, but I’m trying to follow GregMat’s advice that the paragraph is the “Word of God.” My understanding is that even for inference questions, the correct answer should be strongly supported by the passage, without requiring a big logical leap, making me convince myself, or bringing in outside knowledge.

For this question, I understand why B is correct. The guppy study shows reduced predation risk through increased alertness/antipredator behavior, while the tadpole study shows reduced predation risk through decreased activity.

But I’m confused about C.

Choice C says that the situation created experimentally for the guppy study would be more likely to occur in the wild than the situation created for the tadpole study.

I can see that hungry vs. well-fed guppies seems more natural than partially anesthetized tadpoles, but the passage doesn’t explicitly discuss what happens in the wild or whether either experimental setup is natural. Is the answer relying on common sense here? Or is there something in the wording of the passage that directly supports C?

I’m trying to understand where the line is between a valid GRE inference and an unsupported assumption.

Thanks!

It’s common sense.
