GRE Sentence Equivalence practice question

Came across this question in a practice session.

My guess for the blank: FALSELY. Did not understand the explanation in the video as given: 1. King could not have allowed anything negative to be written about him. (Counter: What if the biography was written after he is dead. Not sure how to think about this). Explanation 2: Attesting to his greatness. How will the blank 2 be positive. Let’s say the first part is negative. Second part has NOT and SURPRISING both contrast words. Can you explain the approach to solve this?

Sorry for the late response.

That works, for a TC but there’s no pair here so it can’t be an answer for SE.

For this I think we would need a bit more evidence. If it was hinting at that, then it would say something like “king cultivated…while he was alive”. Even if that was the case what pair would go there then?

  1. Blank describes how the biographies about the king were written
  • It has to support the idea of “his greatness” (attesting to)
  • It has to support the idea of “cultivated a society imbued with censorship and distrust” (it is not surprising that OR since)
  1. So maybe something that portrays him well

However, this is not an ETS question, and also it has a low % correct which means it might not be a good question, it’s not worth analyzing it in depth

Thanks, understood.
