GRE TC Question Using Math Strat

For this question, why is the “;” not used as a support logic word. Shouldn’t the first idea support the second idea, meaning both should have good connotation? The last 2 blanks should be positive connotation blanks according to the math strategy as the whole 2nd idea should be a positive idea.

If its a positive connotation, how would “dismissed him” fit in the idea?

No you are completely correct. But then in that case, the math strategy fails completely because the semi colon is supposed to indicate that both ideas are supporting each other, but they are actually contrasting since the first idea is positive and the second idea is negative.

Im not completely sure about this, but here is my reasoning

so B2 can be solved by using previously referenced (the phrase who dismissed him)

As for B3:
The main point of the second part from the semi colon till B3 is:
His contemporaries dismissed his as a _B3.
Now dismissed him is negative and the entire idea should be positive. So B3 should be negative.

Maybe there is an easier way of seeing this.

@ganesh could you confirm this thought process?

I think its more that blank 2 ITSELF sets up a contrast between Blank 1 and Blank 3
