GRE Verbal practice test Q volume 1

Hello! I am working on some TC/SE questions but could not get the 2nd answer for this problem. I was able to get the first blank using the math strategy. How i tackled it:
Determine idea 1 and idea 2 if supporting or contrasting. I realized they were supporting because of “because” and the - lines. I got the first blank from “people quickly become bored” and “instant”. This made me make up my own word, “fleeting” which perfectly matched with blank 1.

However, blank 2 I made up the word “flair”. because of this part from the text: “no stage, no interesting books, no heroic exploits…” But… I could not match flair to any of the answer choices. Then, I ultimately settled on competing “attraction” because I connected attraction and flair together in my mind, despite not being synonyms…how would I get to correct answer in this?

This is from practice set 3:Hard from the official gre verbal reasoning book, vol 1 second edition on page 63. It is question number 4.

You’re not getting the right answer because what should be attributed as substance/skill was interpreted as "flair’, which is an interpretive guess outside of the scope of the question, violating the Word of Zeus strategy.

Not to mention, even is we assume that attraction is the right semantic guess, you still cant choose blank (D) because it states “competing attraction” - this means something entirely different from just attraction. You have to take the entire phrase with meaning in account while dealing with option choices.
