Greg's Quant Problem Solving

Hey guys, I was doing the practice problems in the problem-solving area and got this question wrong. I watched the video explaining it and it came to a conclusion that √4 = 2 which makes sense but my thinking was that it would be ±2, so I had 2 as my answer. Could someone please confirm whether to always take the square root as a positive for the gre

The number of solutions for x in the equation x + 2 =√(x + 8) is

It’s good to go through the GRE math conventions PDF (available on ETS). For squares and square roots, you can remember that if the √ symbol is present, consider only the positive value of the root. If the symbol is not explicitly present in the question, consider all possibilities

√4 = x
Roots: x = 2

4 = x²
Roots: x= 2, x= -2
