Group 4 Flashcard Quiz Q13

Can someone please help me with this question. I know this is a percent increase question, but the way I solve it is not the way Greg solves it. Can someone please explain why my method is incorrect (work posted below)? I knew I was doing it wrong because my answer did not make sense, but I am confused about when to apply which equation.

Thanks!

I think you’re invoking the formula for percent increase, which is:

\frac{\text{Percent Increase}}{100} = \frac{V_n - V_O}{V_O}

The blue circled thing should then be 0.07 not 1.07. It says “percent increase” not “percent”.

Also, you don’t really need a formula for this exercise because this is essentially just algebra.

You have a quantity such that when increased by 107\% (equivalent to multiplying by 1.07) yields 100.

Thus, you’re looking to solve for x in:

x \cdot 1.07 = 100

which should be presumably quite straightforward for you.

I think there was a gap in my understanding regarding the percent increase formula. But yes, the algebraic method is much easier to use. I just wanted to make sure I understood percent increase correctly.

Thank you!
