Help to build the math strategy for this big book question

Hi, I used the math strategy to solve this question. But I think my math strategy is incorrect - can someone help?

For the sentence before the semicolon, I saw the comma separating project and expense which indicates support. Therefore, looking at expense cannot be numbered, I decided to put expense on the 1st blank (something bad)

Then for the second blank after the semi colon which indicates support related to the idea expense cannot be numbered, I decided to choose innovation. I know from the video it sounds like I am telling a story as the sentence doesn’t suggest anything about that - I recognise that it is wrong. But cannot be numbered from my interpretation could be money is not an issue. If money or expense is not an issue, why should the second blank be cost saving? That caused me hesitant to choose E in the beginning.

Thank you in advance.

The comma isn’t really a logic division here, “Among the many i)---------, expense cannot be numbered” is one idea in itself, since there’s just one verb/action which is “cannot”. So you can’t use the math strategy around the comma.

Your logic for the first blank just doesn’t make sense. It doesn’t make sense to say “Among the expenses, expense cannot be numbered”. We can use the usage strategy here to realise that “Among the…” suggests that expense is an example of Blank 1. It’s similar to what Greg has done regarding the fruits and cherries in his annotation. So, in the context of a project, blank 1 should be something like “factors”, “issues”, “concerns” etc.

But cannot be numbered from my interpretation could be money is not an issue. If money or expense is not an issue, why should the second blank be cost saving?

Your interpretation is correct. The semi colon continues the idea that “money is not an issue”, so we continue the idea that the project can be done inexpensively.

Hi Ganesh, thank you for taking time to share. Really appreciate it.

I still couldn’t quite wrap my head around that the comma cannot be a logic division - in a way, we can already tell the first blank will be a negative blank if we focus on the subject expense. I actually got the first blank more or less right (even though it’s not perfect, I heuristically fill the blank with the fastest idea that comes to my head).

It’s the second blank which I struggle more with. It was precisely that money is not an issue that I thought innovation could be a better answer. It didn’t connect for me that the project ought to be economical because of that.

It cannot be a logical division because the stuff on the left and right of the comma are not complete ideas, you should check out “idea chunking” in the first session of this course:

You can’t use logical divisions unless they are between separate ideas. So you can’t use the math strategy for Blank 1.

Innovation is not related to money, but economy is related to money.
