Help with Reading Comprehension

Hello!
I hope you all are well. I have started the RC portion of the GRE and I am quite struggling with it. I hope someone will help me in solving the following problems that I am facing:

  1. Greg used the term ‘Hammering’ in the videos and it is looking for words like but, although etc but I couldn’t understand the concept behind it. I hope that someone will explain to me with example the concept of this ‘Hammer’.
  2. I couldn’t come up with synonyms while I am simplifying the sentences. If I simplify each sentence (both in short and long passages), I tend to focus on each word and it takes a lot of time to summarise the whole paragraph. So, please guide me on how I can be more efficient and simply the sentence with the right synonyms?

Do timed and untimed practice. You need to force yourself to do it otherwise you’ll stuck with your old habits, for eg if you give yourself only 1min per paragraph then you can’t just go word via word , it will be almost impossible to simplify the paragraph.
