Help with Support/Contrast

My Approach:
If choose just the first part of the sentence (until the “:”), we can chunk the sentence like this:

  1. Academic breakthroughs often yield insights
  2. A field which has repeatedly failed to _______ its theories
  3. Forced to reconsider them

Going by this, I chose the answer for blank 1 as Support: is

Could someone tell me why this is incorrect?

I think you’re right, I’ve updated the answer key

The answer was supposed to be contrast with “is forced to”, but if you make “forced to” part of the idea like you did, then it’s a support.
