any tips to avoid story telling while solving the blank text completion questions

I suggest not seeing the choices in the first place and understand the sentences fully before attempting to solve it. Also, after answering the question, ask yourself what is the evidence from the sentences that lead to your answer.

but wont this be a little time consuming in the real test.

Filling with your own words or at-least getting sense of the blank helps because answer choices creates bias and ETS has mastered the art of baiting people into falling in love with a certain answer choice.
