How long before retaking?

On test day I got my score of 161/159 and now I know that is 87th / 59th percentile. I got my essay score back at 3.5 which is well below what I was aiming. So of course I want to retake the GRE and work on correcting where I fell short on my essay writing.

While I work on my core faults (over confidence resulting in lack of studying for the essay) I was wondering how long people generally wait before retaking. Deadlines are coming up, so I don’t feel like I can really just relax. But I also feel like the 21 day waiting period is too short of a time to really unlearn/learn the right skills.

Is there any rough idea of what amount of time one should aim for? I am pleased with my 320. I got a much better score on my practice test and I was super stressed test day. My main concern is just that essay.

First: do you even need to bother about writing? What’s this for?

I absolutely need to worry about writing, I am going for humanities.

For writing, I think you can just wait for 21 days.

Thank you very much! I am going to take it a little bit after the 21 days. Just to give myself time to reflect on what I did wrong and improve ever so slightly.
