Best strategy to solve if you’re having difficulty is to solve sentence by sentence!
a distribution of 850 different measurements, x centimeters is at the 73rd percentile.
i.e x = 850 \times0.73 = 620.5 \text{ or } 621 \text{ approx. } (you can use any of the values)
If there are 68 measurements in the distribution that are greater than y centimeters but less than x centimeters;
621 - 68 = 553 measurements are less than y.
Explanation: we know that there are 68 measurements greater than y but less than x. This means that these 68 measurements are included in the 620.5 measurements that are less than x. So if we subtract these 68 measurements from the 620.5 measurements less than x, we get 620.5 - 68 = 552.5 measurements that are less than y
then y is approximately at what percentile in the distribution?
y is approximately at the (\frac{552.5} {850}) \times 100% = 65th percentile in the distribution.
