(I'm Overwhelmed) Module Vocab Quiz #11 Doubt (Spoilers)

Hey everyone. I had a query regarding question 9 of the mentioned quiz. I was slightly confused by the answer choices between digression, deviation and discrepancy, primarily because I have seen digression and deviation being used interchangeably far more than deviation & discrepancy. For example, digressing from a topic being spoken about is the same as deviating from the topic. Can someone please clarify on why digression & deviation are incorrect and also, any tips that one utilises to be cognizant of these minute differences? I know that remembering the meaning & context of the word is important, but sometimes, it’s just not possible to memorise so much.

Hi, what are the correct answers supposed to be? I think we might need to modify the question because digression and deviation are close in my opinion as well.

Sorry for the late reply. According to the answer provided (screenshot provided below), the correct pairs are tirade - diatribe & deviation - discrepancy. In my opinion, discrepancy is closer to an inconsistency. This might be interpreted as a deviation, leading to them being classified as synonyms. To resolve this, my suggestion would be to change one of the three options among deviation, digression & discrepancy - preferably discrepancy - to make the answer choices more clearer.

Let’s keep the answer key as it is. Can you pick a word for us to change “digression” to, that is clearly different?

Oof, tough choice. So many words to choose from :joy:. How about “inveigle”?

Inveigle is a verb unfortunately, we need a noun here so it’s consistent with the others

Ok, I understand. How about expedient? That’s a noun

That’s an adjective right? It describes something, we need a thing.

The noun form is the same for expedient as the adjective form. If this isn’t working then I don’t know which one to choose :smiling_face_with_tear:. There’s so many GRE words lol. Can you please choose one?

Wow, I was wrong then! TIL

It’s been changed to expedient :grinning:

Thanks a lot Ganesh! Hope you have a good day ahead!!!
