Incorporating synonyms while studying Vocab

I was watching a Sentence Equivalence class by Greg and there he emphasized incorporating ‘GRE synonyms’ (around 2 or 3) for words you study. For someone having weak vocab and recently started with Vocab prep, how do I know whether the synonym is ‘GRE level’ ?

Should I just go to Google → Search the list for synonyms and find the ones that seem fancy?

Or should I first complete the word list and then think of this?
