I’ve read that in Fact can be used as both support and contrast depending on the context but the real question is how do we know when?
Yes, “in fact” can indeed be thought of as either a support or contrast. What you should look for are other support or contrast cues that indicate what to do in a particular case.
For this example:
- Identify the idea chunks (you can do either 2 or 3, depending on how you conceive of it)
- “In fact“ is being used to discuss what?
- Find the other part of the sentence that is referring to the same concept. Are there support or contrast cues present here that would change the logic?
- How would you utilize the “in fact” to fill one of the blanks? As support or contrast?
- Look for additional support/contrast cues in the remaining idea chunk, and use that to decide how the ideas chunks support or contrast each other
so basically dont use infact as either a support or contrast word use something else😂
