LSAT Critical reasoning-65

Could anyone please answer this question with an explanation?

Hi,

The main gist of the passage is as follows:

shallow water–>easily polluted by nutrient rich sewage
more nutrition–>algae multiplies
more algae–>food for toxic microorganisms
toxic microorganisms–> most fishes die

Options:
A] Fishes mostly die because of pollution rather than some other way
(Incorrect- no comparison between pollution and any other way is mentioned)

B] In waters with abundant algae, microorganisms toxic to fish reproduce more quickly than other microorganisms
(Incorrect- no info provided regarding toxic m/o multiplying more quickly than other m/o)

C] Nutrition from sewage do not otherwise harm fish other than resulting in abundant toxic microorganisms
(Incorrect- no info regarding the nutrients and other components not harming the fish)

D]Algae will not multiply in non polluted waters.
(Incorrect- no indication about algae not multiplying in non polluted waters)

E] Overnutrifying waters will result in death of most fishes.
(Correct- most fish die because of toxic m/o due to algae in overnutrified water)

Hope this helps!

Thank you. I do have a question. Why the answer is not D? It says algae will multiply in polluted waters, so can’t we infer that algae will not multiply in non polluted waters? Block of 4 by Greg.

Yeah, I have the same question. My 1st instinct was to apply the Block of 4 and mark ‘D’ as my answer

The reason D is not correct is because

  1. The passage states that the algae will multiply, but it doesn’t state that there was no algae before the sewage. No evidence.
  2. The option also has a tone of extreme language to it “Algae will not proliferate”.
