i am not able to understand how a statement said by someone else represent the main idea?
Information included in a passage by an author must serve a purpose.
In some cases, the author will state a position directly. In other cases, it will be stated indirectly through reported speech.
For example, you’re probably accustomed to situations when an author includes a quote or opinion from someone else, it’s often used to support, contrast with, or build on their main idea. Even though it’s someone else’s words, the author has chosen to include it for a reason, and it reflects the author’s intention within the overall structure of the passage.
In the end, the passage is the construction of the author, and so any part of it can perform any function as desired by the author.
So regardless of whose words they are, you must understand why they’ve been included.
